Memorial Day Free Plan
e-mail me

This is one of my best selling plans.

One of the greatest kit manufactures, Top Flight, virtually copied this plan for their awesome flying Taurus.   WOW     What a great plane that was to build and fly. Now you too can own this drop dead beautiful plan and build one of the finest model airplanes to have ever graced our skies.

Elmer Fudd is standing in a box of spare ribs which I have included for your building pleasure.

70" wing span. Power: .60    Plans show wheel brakes on the main gear, how cool.  Magazine article is included.

File $5.00

A BIG thanks to William P. who received a FREE plan for loaning me this fine old magazine.

  Sshhh, I'm hunting wabbits.

Dear Willie,                                                  Thursday, February 14, 2008

You said you wanted pictures when I finished so here they are. I got your Taurus plans on 1/6 and didn't start until about 2 weeks ago. I love to build classics from scratch. I do have a tip for people who want to build this plane with the rolled leading edge. I made a form from a 2X2 and using the tip and root ribs I carved the shape of the leading edge with a wood plane. I then used ammonia on the balsa, rubber banded it to the form for 24 hours and presto, perfect LE. The all up weight of the finished airframe without engine, radio, etc, was just a tick over 2 pounds.  I have also made a set of Taurus plans with a 28" wingspan for electric. I will be starting that one shortly. I have to finish the 28" electric Dirty Birdie that you can see sitting under the tail of my Taurus.
Your plans are fantastic and your service is excellent. I love the fact that I can make them any size I want. I had a Top Flite kit of the Taurus back in the 60's but never built it. It cost $29.95. I have always loved its lines and now thanks to you I have one. Now all I have to do is wait for spring and Ohio's flying season!
Keep up the great work! I am telling all my building friends about your service.

 Regards,

 Don T Bartoshek

YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAA ,,,,,,,,,, I was so happy to win this old Model Airplane News plan on eBay with the ORION on it.... Just as I had expected, the plan had several flaws in it. Unfortunately, the fuselage had more flaws in it alone than Liz Taylor has diamonds.
Luckily for me and you, I am a bum with nothing better to do than play with my old model airplane plans, so I begin working my 'magic' on it will the skill and determination of the "lawn mower man" after his transformation.... I worked at such a lightening pace, it was as if I had entered my computer and emerged as CyberWillie, super plan restorer! ..... I begun by putting some room between the pieces and the fuselage and wing.... I then attached the tail with the skill of a farsighted blacksmith.   Then I dissected the parts laying on the wing drawing just I used to do as a child while playing at removing bones from my Hasbro's "operation" game.  Some 25 plus hours later and several unsuccessful attempts at world domination, I transformed this ill looking caterpillar of a plan into one beautiful mean, lean, flying machine of a drawing.... Now she looked as the original draftsman had only wished he could have drawn her, on one big long sheet of paper.

As if lady luck hadn't been good enough to me already, I had customer from Ohio show up with a box of plans and magazines just as if my one of my prayers had been answered.... OK, I didn't get my prayers answered about inheriting a fortune and being given a harem, but then, I did get to see Janet Jackson booby and my wife did find 5 dollars in the washing machine just as I was given this magazine with this plane construction article in it, so as Rednecks go, I was one super happy Rebel.
The file will print a plan 36" x 105"

69" wing span... .45 shown for power.... The magazine article is included naturally.

Biography of EDWARD J. KAZMIRSKI
A modeler since the late 1920s Birth Date: June 20, 1921 AMA Number: 690746 Information supplied by EJK (2/03) Written & Edited by SS (3/03) Career: • Won the 1960 Internationals with his Orion plane, an RC model • Won the 1961 Nationals with a variation on his Orion plane • His Tauri, Orion and Taurus were kitted by Top Flite Models in Chicago • Directed a contest in Japan for the United States Air Force The following biography is based upon a phone interview between Ed Kazmirski and Stacey Shannon for the AMA History Program. The interview was conducted on February 10, 2003. Beginning Edward J. Kazmirski began building models as a child and continued throughout much of his life. Ed started out with Free Flight models then later ventured into Radio Control (RC) models. His love for modeling grew out of his excitement and fascination over being able to build something that would fly. Ed’s very first model came not from a kit, but instead was something he put together on his own without any help. The rubber band-powered model was made of 1/16-square balsa and covered with silk, very fragile and very light. Ed enjoyed flying that plane immensely. His thrill with model design would later pay off through the kitting of three RC models. It wasn’t until the 1950s, though, that Ed joined his first modeling club in Chicago. It was called the Chicago RC Modelers club and he stayed with the club for 12 years. Ed got into RC models instead of Free Flight because of the frustration of losing Free Flight models. He wanted to have control of his model and not lose it. Competition Ed’s competition activities began later in life after he was involved with RC modeling. First he competed in many local contests and found that competition added a new element to modeling, which he enjoyed. Soon enough Ed was competing at the national and international level. In 1960, Ed won the Internationals in Zurich, Switzerland, flying his Orion, which is now in possession of the National Model Aviation Museum. The experience of competing internationally is something that Ed will never forget. The 1960s Internationals were the first in which the United States competed, so the U.S. team was interested to see what other countries were building and other countries were interested to see the models coming from the United States. According to Ed, Dr. Walt Good was the team manager. When Ed and the rest of the United States team were checking in, some of the German, Swedish and French competitors came over to check out their planes. They began shaking their heads at the American models with good finishes telling people that the models would not do well.

I am extremely proud to offer to you the "World Famous" SMOG HOG, winner of the 1956 NATS by Howard Bonner.
This plane looks like a trainer, but is capable of performing inside and outside loops, and other aerobatics maneuvers too!
This plan is part of our American history,,, part of our heritage.   It is part of what this country is, and was.
Designed to last, built by the best,  and flown by the greatest generation to ever live.   This plan deserves to be in every RC'ers collection.    I have invested over 30 hours into repairing and redrawing this plan to a BETTER than new condition.   The magazine article makes for great reading and is very informative. The pictures of Howard Bonner and his radio gear make you realize just how far we have advanced in this great hobby of ours in the past 46 years.

74" wing span.... 47" length.... Engines .19 to .35 ..... Wing area 6 sq. feet..... Magazine article is included.

What in the heck ate it? LOL

Hi uncle Wilie,

Can you please let me know the price of printing and shipping the plans for Astro Hog and Smog Hog (page 22) to India?
I am an aero modeller from India and Had built a Smog Hog about 10 years back for a close friend of mine from a very tattered copy of plans and half white ant eaten kit which consisted of soalrbo balsa. I may be able to send you a picture of the Smog Hog (will have to do some searching though) maybe by tomorrow.
I would be interested in the printed and rolled plans and if that is not possible would even consider the file which I can print out in here.
Kindly let me know the prices for both options.
I think I may be able to pay through credit card if I get the Pay Pal Invoice number.
And yes the site is real good with lot of nostalgia and great work done on restoration of those plans
I had served in the Indian Army and currently employed with the corporate world. I am glad the way you have dedicated so many themes to the servicemen of your Country.

With warm regards
Capt (Retd) Manish Chandrayan

Hi Uncle Willie, as promised here's the picture of the Smog Hog built by me for a close friend. It's modified for four channel control, with ailerons added. Powered by a Webra Speed 40 (way too much power)the aileron are effective but have lot of flutter owing to them being operated with a single servo. Had advised the owner to install two servos and take other anti flutter measures. In my home town we have two other Smog Hog's flying one built with (you wont believe it) corrugated plastic sheets and balsa (what you in US call coroplast) and the other one from some local wood and balsa. All fly great and have even attempted some cross country flights with the plastic one.
I am sorry for the low quality picture, it was taken ten years back using scanned image.
And that's me holding the bird LOL

I am sadden to report that the Fred Dunn has past away.
Fred Dunn passed away on Easter Sunday in April of 2004 after suffering from Alzheimer's. His funeral was at the Riverside National Cemetery in California on Monday, April 26, 2004 at 1:00 PM. He received services with full military honors.

It was by fate that I learned of Fred's death just as I was finishing work on a modern version of Fred's historic plane. I kept the right wing basically as it was with the "original" landing gear and aileron dimensions but did upgrade the aileron hinges. The left wing is totally all new and has a much smaller aileron  and a very large flap. These are 2 items that I wish I had on my own Astro Hog. I also included a store boughten grooved landing gear block as a alternative to the original 2 piece, smaller diameter landing gear, which really appeared to be correction to the original landing gear that would have been to small to function well for the models weight. One builder explained it to me that at that time, ALL landing gear was 1/8 wire as their was no 5/32 wire available. That makes sense to me.

Both wings sections do share the exact same ribs and construction techniques just to keep things KISS designed. Of course the wing length and chord are to exact scale.

The Fin and Rudder are basically the same. Gone are the old sewn hinges.

The Elevator appears at first glance to be unchanged BUT has been redrawned and "beefed up" as I was told that the "original" Hogs where notorious for snapping elevators. Also Kapootz is the tail wheel brake that operated off the elevator.   Whoa!   Was that a "problem waiting to happen" and totally unnecessary in grass and of little use on pavement.

Naturally, the fuselage is kept to scale but includes several improvements that I built into my own hog.
I did keep the original K & B Torpedo 35 in the nose. Your free to put in what you want. I fly mine with a Saito .65 Golden Night which is more power than the plane needs. A new 35 to 40 is all the power this plane ever needs.   I also included the old gas tank & hatched compartment. I even put in the converted plastic fuel bottle gas tank, so as to keep the plane the same as the original. Besides, it was such a hoot to look at. A modern 8 oz. tank should drop right in their. I made numerous other improvements that are of little or no concern to list.

I did include a section on the plans with extra patterns for your building pleasure. Keep the original patterns for quality control and repair needs.

71" wing span. 51" Length. 12" chord. Full scale. Engine K&B .35 The magazine article is included.

HISTORY: The Astro Hog dates back to the late 50’s when F W Dunn Jr. obtained great success with his design in aerobatic circles. Even though radio control was cumbersome and heavy, and engines did not have the power that they do today, this model established that radio controlled aerobatics were practical, exciting and here to stay.

I love you mod's. Ailerons and even flaps with no difficulties

This is a high resolution TIFF file containing 200 x 200 dots per inch. The file will print a plan 36" x 84".

64" wing span.   The 6 page magazine article is included.  Awesome article and plan of "Pappys" plane. Now you too can build and fly the same plane as one of RCs Grandfathers.

Now had you rather buy & fly some piece of crap built overseas and sold as a toy?,,,, or build and fly a really neat radio controlled model airplane from the "good ole days"?

I have included a close-up scan just so that you can see for yourself that theres nutten up my sleeve when I produce a plan. No tricks, no fakes, no hiding the truth. Just the finest plan you will ever purchase.
